He began his career as an assistant director before making his directorial debut with L'Astragale (1968), an adaptation of Albertine Sarrazin's novel. Casaril directed several films, including Les Novices (1970), starring Brigitte Bardot and Annie Girardot, and Piaf (1974), a biopic about Édith Piaf.
