Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Perfery.

What is Perfery?

Perfery is a free web app that suggests films to watch next from a public Letterboxd list, hand-picked seed titles, or a short plain-language prompt, mood and tone, sure, but also references, comparisons, questions, or a specific idea.

It builds an editable grid of recommendations you can trim, swap, filter, and export as a CSV for Letterboxd.

With a free account it's also a home for your film life: track your physical-media collection, rate films, build and share lists, and keep a watchlist Perfery actively helps you watch.

Is Perfery free?

Yes. Recommendations, filters, and CSV export are free, and so is a Perfery account, with one you can rate films, build lists and a watchlist, and keep a physical-media collection of up to 100 films at no cost.

A few things are metered so Perfery stays fast for everyone: there's a daily limit on vibe searches (higher once you're signed in), and a free collection holds up to 100 discs. Perfery+, a paid membership tier, will lift those limits, it's coming soon, there's no charge yet, and anything that's free today stays free.

How does Perfery work?

You choose an input: paste a public Letterboxd list or profile URL, search and add any films as seeds, or type a free-form ask, anything from “slow rainy noir” to “films like X” or “what fits a Sunday with friends.” Perfery uses TMDb metadata plus keyword and similarity-style matching to propose a related set of films.

You stay in control: adjust filters, remove rows, swap alternates, then export if you want a Letterboxd-ready list.

Do I need an account to use Perfery?

No. You don't need a Perfery account, recommendations run from a public Letterboxd list URL, from films you pick, or from a free-form prompt without signing in. And you never need a Letterboxd account either: Perfery only reads public Letterboxd pages, and importing your history is a file upload, not a Letterboxd login.

A free Perfery account is optional, it's what lets you keep a collection, ratings, lists, and a watchlist that follow you across devices. To bring your viewing history in, import a Letterboxd export (CSV or ZIP) from Import & Export in your profile.

What can I do with a Perfery account?

An account (free) turns Perfery into a home for your film life, not just your next pick. Track your physical-media collection, rate films 0–100 and see the community Perfery Score, build lists you can keep private or share, and keep a watchlist Perfery helps you actually watch, filter it by mood, by what's streaming, or roll the dice for a pick.

It's all optional and it all syncs across your devices, recommendations work fully without an account.

How do I use Letterboxd lists or imports with Perfery?

For list-based runs, paste any public Letterboxd list URL, your films page (letterboxd.com/username/films/), or a rated slice (for example letterboxd.com/username/films/rated/4-5/). Perfery reads those public pages to build input for recommendations.

For diary-based “hide watched,” use Import Letterboxd in the nav to upload a Letterboxd export file (CSV or ZIP). Your export is processed in the browser; nothing is posted to Letterboxd.

What Letterboxd URLs can I use?

Use public list URLs, your profile films page, or a public rated page. Private lists must be set to public on Letterboxd so the page can be read.

Why doesn’t my private Letterboxd list work?

Perfery only reads public Letterboxd pages. If a list is private, the site cannot see its titles, make the list public or paste a different public URL.

What is vibe mode?

Vibe mode is free-form text instead of starting from a list. You can lean on mood, tone, and setting, or name a reference film, ask a question, sketch a plot or era, or say “something in the vein of…” in one short paragraph.

Perfery interprets that text together with TMDb data to suggest films that fit what you wrote.

Does Perfery use AI?

Yes, in a narrow way. Perfery uses AI mainly to translate your plain-language prompt (whether that is mood, a comparison, or a question) into structured hints, things like genres, themes, or candidate seeds, so the rest of the pipeline knows what to look for.

The actual recommendations are ranked by Perfery’s custom-built algorithm on top of TMDb data: keyword and similarity-style matching, list-based signals when you start from Letterboxd or hand-picked films, filters, and niche lean, not by a chat model choosing or ordering your grid.

What does “hide watched” or excluding Letterboxd films do?

Turn on hide-watched and Perfery leaves out films you've already seen, so results skew toward the unwatched. It knows what you've seen from an imported Letterboxd diary and from films you've marked watched in your Perfery profile. There's also a filter to hide films already on your watchlist.

Nothing is posted back to Letterboxd; it only filters your results in Perfery.

Where does Perfery store my data?

Signed out, everything stays in your browser (localStorage), your imported diary, filters, and works in progress. When you make a free Perfery account, the things you build, collection, ratings, taste profile, lists, and watchlist, sync to our servers so they follow you across devices.

Your search prompts are used to build that set of recommendations and to help improve Perfery; they aren't added to your saved profile or activity history. You can export everything, or delete your account and all its data, anytime from Import & Export in your profile. See our Privacy Policy for what's collected and how long it's kept.

How do I export or delete my data?

From Import & Export in your profile you can download everything Perfery holds for you as a single file, or permanently delete your account and all its data. Both are self-serve, no email required.

Can I filter recommendations by streaming service?

Yes. After you have a results grid, you can narrow films by streaming availability using provider data from TMDb (region and catalog coverage depend on what TMDb reports).

Where do IMDb and Metascore ratings come from?

IMDb ratings are fetched from imdbapi.dev when available. Metascores come from Metacritic and are cached for faster repeat lookups. Both are shown for convenience and may not always be present for every title.

Can I export recommendations to Letterboxd?

Yes. Download the CSV from your grid and import it into Letterboxd using their list import flow.

Is Perfery affiliated with Letterboxd or TMDb?

No. Perfery is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Letterboxd or TMDb. Film metadata is powered by TMDb; Letterboxd pages or exports are only used when you choose those inputs.
