Privacy Policy

Overview

Perfery ("we," "our") is a film recommendation and collection platform operated by Perfery LLC. This policy describes what data we collect when you use perfery.com, why we collect it, who processes it on our behalf, and how to get a copy of it or delete all of it. Data we collect

• Account details: if you create an account, your email address, name, and chosen avatar, managed by our sign-in provider Clerk. Your account is shared with Castmates, our film trivia game, one login covers both.
• Your taste graph: films you mark watched, your ratings (0–100), vibe ratings, and watchlists. Signed out, this lives only in your browser. Signed in, it syncs to our database (Cloudflare D1) so it follows you across devices.
• Your activity history: a timestamped log of the actions you take signed in: ratings, watches, watchlist and list edits, collection changes, and Castmates games. We keep this ledger so your stats and insights are computed from one accurate history.
• Your physical-media collection: the discs and editions you own: formats, labels, editions, and any purchase date, price, packaging, or notes you choose to enter.
• Insights we derive: a taste fingerprint plus viewing and collection statistics computed from the data above. This is profiling in the GDPR sense: it personalizes your recommendations and stats. It never makes automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects about you.
• Letterboxd import: your Letterboxd username (if you connect one) and the contents of any export file you upload (watched films, ratings).
• Search queries and uploaded images: what you type into the search box, and any image you upload to search by. These are sent to the AI services below to interpret them.
• Technical data: your IP address (rate-limiting and abuse prevention) and a pseudonymous analytics identifier (the _ga cookie), if you consent to analytics.

Why we collect it

• To give you film recommendations and interpret your searches.
• To sync your profile, collection, and taste data across devices.
• To generate personal insights and statistics about your viewing and collection.
• To compute community ratings and trends (the Perfery Score).
• To understand aggregate usage and improve the product (analytics).
• To process payments, if you buy a paid membership.
• To prevent abuse and keep the service running.

We do not sell personal data, and we do not use advertising cookies.

Who processes it (sub-processors)

• Clerk: account sign-in (email, name, avatar).
• Vercel: hosting and cookieless site analytics.
• Cloudflare: profile sync, your collection and activity ledger (D1), and list fetching.
• Google (Analytics / BigQuery): aggregate usage measurement (with your consent), exported to BigQuery for our internal analysis. Signed-in activity events (like ratings and collection changes) are also stored in BigQuery for computing insights, kept separate from analytics data.
• Anthropic: the AI that interprets your search text and uploaded images to produce recommendations. Not used to train their models; not retained by them.
• Voyage AI: converts your search text into embeddings for matching.
• TMDb, Trakt, OMDb: film metadata and ratings.
• Letterboxd / ScraperAPI: reading public Letterboxd pages you point us at.
• Paddle or Lemon Squeezy: payment processing for paid membership (they are the merchant of record; we never see or store card numbers).

Cookies and storage

Perfery sets one analytics cookie: Google Analytics’ _ga. Where the law requires opt-in consent (the EEA, UK, Quebec, Brazil, Turkey, South Korea), a consent banner appears before any analytics loads and nothing fires until you accept. Everywhere else, analytics runs by default and you can opt out anytime via "Cookie preferences" in the footer, which also lets you change an earlier decision. We use no advertising or third-party tracking cookies.

We also use browser localStorage (functional, not tracking) to keep your taste data, collection drafts, and preferences on your device. Vercel Analytics measures page performance without cookies or cross-site identifiers.

How long we keep it

• Account data (including your collection and activity ledger): until you delete it or your account. The ledger is append-only by design, deleting your account erases it entirely.
• Share snapshots (pages you share): 14 days.
• Letterboxd list cache: 7 days.
• Analytics: Google Analytics default retention (14 months).

International transfers

Our processors are primarily US-based. Where data leaves the EEA/UK, transfers rely on Standard Contractual Clauses and each vendor’s data-processing agreement.

Your rights

You can access, correct, export, and delete your data, and object to processing. The two big ones are built in: Export your data and Delete my account & data both live in your profile’s Import & export room. Export gives you everything as one JSON file; delete permanently erases your collection, taste data, activity history, Castmates stats, and the account itself. For anything else, or if you’d rather do it by email, write to hello@perfery.com. If you’re in the EEA/UK you also have the right to complain to your data-protection authority.

Age

Perfery accounts require you to be at least 16 years old.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the latest version, and we’ll note material changes on the site.
