Wang Yongzhang (Jiang Wu) is a man caught in the orbit of Unit 731, the Imperial Japanese Army's biological warfare laboratory during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Around him move Du Cunshan (Wang Zhiwen) and Gu Boxuan (Li Naiwen), each drawn into a machinery of experiments and cruelty that grinds forward without reason or mercy. Zhao Linshan holds the camera steady on the faces of the men as they move through corridors where the light has gone gray and thin.
