Janet Frobisher (Bette Davis) writes mystery novels in an isolated house, and she has been apart from her criminal husband for years. When he turns up unannounced, she poisons him. Irving Rapper keeps the story close to the house, and as Janet is about to dispose of the body, Dr. Henderson (Emlyn Williams) arrives, and the lamplit rooms seem to close in around her.
