Bender (Guy Pearce), a widowed physician in 1859, agrees to escort Sarah (DeWanda Wise) and her daughter through the frontier to find a faith healer who might cure the girl's touch, which kills everything it reaches. Sarah believes her child is possessed; Bender suspects disease. Ned Crowley builds dread through stillness and hesitation, letting the landscape and the wrongness accumulate without relief.
