Mother

Masako Fukuhara (Kinuyo Tanaka) wants to keep her widowed household together, and she pushes on with it even as there is less to push on with. Her teenaged daughter Toshiko (Kyōko Kagawa) watches her mother work to sustain the family, and Mikio Naruse follows the two of them through that effort. The screenplay grew from a school essay competition, and what rides on Masako is whether her family can stay in one piece.
