Philip Burton (Toby Jones) is a schoolteacher in a Welsh mining village who has given his life to the stage and to his students. When a restless, talented boy named Richard Jenkins Jr. (Harry Lawtey) arrives in his orbit, Philip sees in him the hunger he once had. As Richard's gifts grow and the possibility of escape begins to take shape, everything that ties them both to this place comes into question.
