A house in the French countryside, one ordinary day. Isabelle Granger (Lucia Bosè) and her friend (Jeanne Moreau) do yard work, talk about their families, and receive the occasional visitor, among them a washing machine salesman (Gérard Depardieu). Marguerite Duras keeps the chores and the silences in plain view, and the life she shows is made of long hours of housework, a few words between two women, and a great deal left unsaid.
