Robert Peace grows up in Newark in the 1990s, caught between his mother Jackie (Mary J. Blige), who works herself raw for his future, and the streets that surround them. His teacher Skeet Douglas (Chiwetel Ejiofor) sees his gift for science and pushes him toward Yale, a world away from home. As Robert climbs toward the life everyone envisions for him, the forces pulling him back grow harder to resist.
