Saint Bernard

Paulo Honório (Othon Bastos) started out a poor ploughman and is now a rich farmer, and he wants to be richer still. He pays little attention to his wife Madalena (Isabel Ribeiro), a teacher who pushes back against his tyrannical ways. Leon Hirszman, adapting the novel by Graciliano Ramos, keeps the camera close on Paulo's ambition and lets the marriage fall apart around it.
