In 1943, a Wehrmacht sergeant named Walter (Jürgen Frohriep) is posted to a secluded Bulgarian village, where the war feels far off and he has time to draw. Then a transit camp fills with Jews arriving from Greece, and one of them, Ruth (Sasha Krusharska), asks him to help a pregnant woman. Konrad Wolf lets the two of them talk through the camp fence, and the village sits just behind them.
