“The brand new… All new”

Synopsis

Karen Carpenter (Merrill Gruver, voice) is an American singer whose final 17 years are told by modified Barbie dolls, with actors speaking their lines off-screen. Todd Haynes, who co-wrote it with Cynthia Schneider, mixes the dolls with archival and on-location footage, all set to the Carpenters' own hit songs. Under the tidy, glossy surface sits her anorexia, which the people around her keep mistaking for ordinary dieting.
