Ten Canoes

Directed by Rolf de Heer, Peter Djigirr90 minAdventure, Comedy, Drama

“Ten canoes, three wives, one hundred and fifty spears...trouble”

Synopsis

Ridjimiraril (Crusoe Kurddal) is an Aboriginal hunter in Arnhem Land, travelling with his brothers to cut bark for canoes and hunt for goose eggs in the swamp. His younger brother Dayindi (Jamie Gulpilil) has been eyeing one of his wives, so Ridjimiraril tells him a story from long ago, spoken in voiceover by David Gulpilil. Rolf de Heer and Peter Djigirr made the film in the Ganalbingu language, and the canoes, the bark and the hunt are all there on screen.
