The Listener

“Lives are on the line.”

Beth volunteers at a crisis helpline, taking calls through the night from people in the dark. She listens to Michael and Andy, to Corinne and Jinx, each voice a stranger with nowhere else to turn, their despair arriving in her ear as the city sleeps. By dawn, she sits alone in the empty call center, the phones silent, the fluorescent lights hum.
