The New Babylon
Why would a soldier and a shopgirl end up on opposite sides of a city in revolt? In Paris in 1871, Louise Poirier (Yelena Kuzmina) works at the New Babylon department store, and Jean (Pyotr Sobolevsky) is a conscripted French soldier who falls in love with her. Kozintsev and Trauberg set their love against the Commune and the army sent to crush it, so that each of them must answer to a side before either answers to the other.
