VISIBLE CRAFT

naturalistic performance

Films where the primary formal commitment is to performance that feels discovered rather than delivered — actors (professional or non-professional) inhabiting behavior with such specificity and apparent spontaneity that craft becomes invisible, replaced by the texture of lived experience: overlapping speech, physical awkwardness, emotional contradiction, and the sense that the camera is catching something rather than staging it. Distinguished from theatrical-style (which foregrounds stylization, artifice, and the visible architecture of performance) by requiring that the acting register suppress its own constructedness; distinguished from documentary-style (which is a cinematographic register about how the camera watches) by being specifically about the acting body and behavioral truth, not lens choice or shooting style — a naturalistic-performance film may be shot with any visual grammar.
