LIFE & RELATIONSHIPS

family dynamics

Films whose primary dramatic and emotional architecture is the family system itself — the accumulated weight of roles, resentments, loyalties, and silences that bind parents, children, siblings, and sometimes chosen or surrogate kin across time, where no single relationship or individual crisis monopolizes the frame but rather the whole organism of the family is under examination. Distinct from marriage-in-collapse (which isolates the spousal bond as the central engine of deterioration) by distributing dramatic attention across the broader generational and lateral network; distinct from returning-home (which requires a homecoming event as the structural spine) by encompassing family-system films where the family simply convenes, persists, or fractures without a departure-and-return premise — Tokyo Story, Yi Yi, and Shoplifters are family-dynamics films whose drama is ongoing habitation and relation, not the shock of reentry.
